Actors, directors, producers, festival directors, journalists, international buyers and sellers, and in a word, everyone who forms part of the industry of the seventh art was there to attend one of the most eagerly awaited gatherings at the Cannes Festival. Catalan Films & TV hosted an event that celebrated Catalan cinema's milestone achievements over these past days: the signature of an international co-production agreement with different European regions, the presentation of the new production guide of the Barcelona Catalunya Film Commission, and the success of the Catalan industry at the festival.
Along these lines, five Catalan productions have positioned themselves in the competition's additional or parallel sections. These are sections that were set up to enable the discovery of the most innovative or daring films. Such is the case of Jaime Rosales' La soledad, produced by Fresdeval and In Vitro Films, which was selected within the Certain Regard section, as was Ana Katz's film Una novia errante, produced by Mediapro. Savage Grace by Tom Kalin was featured in the Directors' Fortnight section, and Yo and El orfanato, by Rafa Cortés and J. A. Bayona respectively, were featured during the Critics' Week. The casts of these different films were on location at the Catalan Films & TV event to present their productions, with such renowned spokespeople as Belén Rueda, Geraldine Chaplin and Àlex Brendemühl.
The institutional representation of the Catalan film industry was embodied by Antoni Lladó, the Director of the Catalan Institute of Cultural Industries of the Generalitat de Catalunya (Catalan Regional Government), Carles Sala, the Director of Cultural Action of the Barcelona Institute of Culture and Júlia Goytisolo, Director of the Barcelona Catalunya Film Commission. Lladó kicked off the event by calling attention to the strength of Catalan cinema and the extraordinary international recognition that the region's audiovisual producers have earned.
Yet another noteworthy presentation was that of Ángel Sala, the Director of the Sitges International Film Festival of Catalonia, who announced the film that will be opening this year's event: El orfanato by Juan A. Bayona. Sala also took the opportunity to invite the international audience at the Catalan Films & TV event to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of the Catalan competition, which is drawing on its experience in Cannes to close its final scheduling.
