Video games and cinema, a marriage of convenience

For the second consecutive year, Catalan Films & TV has drawn on the Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia to host a conference on the gaming industry. The strong ties between audiovisual production and the video game become more than obvious when we consider the many transfers from the big screen to the console, and the other way around. The Catalan industry is by no means alien to this new phenomenon, which already has some great examples of its own. One such case was Nacho Vigalondo's Cronocrímenes / Time Crimes (Zip Films), which saw the launch of the video game before the film was distributed nationally in theatres.
Co-hosted by Catalan Films & TV and Televisió de Catalunya, the round-table discussion featured the participation of some of the sector's leading companies: Pixar, Digital Legends, Cromosoma and Eddadesign, among others. The event's speakers included: Xavier Martí, the Director of Innovation and Co-Director of the Fundació Digitalent's Factoria de Talent Project; Oriol Boira, the Video Game Coordinator for Club Super3 (Televisió de Catalunya) and a Video Game Development Instructor at the UPC (Polytechnic University of Catalonia); Freddy Córdoba, a Goya Award nominee; Xavier Carrillo, a mobile phone software technology specialist; and Rodrigo Blaas, a Pixar animator who took part in projects such as Finding Nemo, Cars and WALL-E.Thus, fifty Catalan companies converged on Sitges to take part in the conference, which explored multiplatform strategies in audiovisual products and the interplay among cinema, video games and animation. The most noteworthy issues under debate included the means of access to this sector, systems of for sales and marketing and project profitability.
