Two projects are born out of the Catalan-Mexican meeting in Sitges
13/10/2009Meeting
The Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival of Catalonia was the chosen backdrop for the meeting between the Catalan and Mexican audiovisual industries, in the second Mexico-Catalonia trade mission hosted by Catalan Films & TV this year. We must recall that Mexico is the Consortium's extra-European focus region for this year's plan of action. Thus, last March, a group of Catalan producers travelled to Guadalajara, drawing on the city's International Film Festival.
Later, in October, a similar meeting was held in Sitges, giving rise to two possible coproductions. The first, Small Soldiers, envisages the participation of the Catalan company Activa Films and the Mexican company Open Windows. This Mexican producer has also joined forces with Alta Realitat for the development of El dragón de fuego / The Fire Dragon, which has already made the ACE PRODUCERS (Ateliers du Cinéma Européen) selection for 2010.
Thus, six Mexican companies* travelled to Sitges, bringing along their projects in development for presentation to fifteen Catalan companies. The conference was divided into three sessions, which were moderated by the Variety Magazine's correspondent for Spain John Hopewell. The first session offered insight to the specifics of the Catalan audiovisual industry and explored two case studies. Projects were later presented in the second session, and finally, the third session was reserved for individual scheduled meetings among the Mexican and Catalan production companies.
