Festival de Cannes
The latest film by Catalan director Isabel Coixet, Map of the Sounds of Tokyo, has managed to position itself in the competition section of the upcoming Cannes Film Festival, which will be held 13 to 24 May. This year, the filmmaker will have to compete with directors to the likes of Quentin Tarantino, Lars von Trier, Michael Haneke, Pedro Almodóvar and Ken Loach, who have accepted the French festival's invitation to present their respective productions internationally.

The festival's competitive short film section has also selected actor Àlex Brendemühl's first foray as a director, who pays tribute to Samuel Beckett with his film Rumbo a peor/ Worstward Ho (Voodoo Productions). Moreover, in the parallel section, the Semaine de la Critique, the event's godfathers have selected Hierro by Gabe Ibáñez (Roxbury Pictures, Madrugada Films and Telecinco Cinema).

On another note, the Catalan participation in both the Semaine de la Critique and the Quinzaine des Réalisateurs will be taking some rather atypical forms this year, with director J. A. Bayona's role as a godfather of the Semaine and filmmaker Albert Serra's appearance on the official poster of the Quinzaine.

Other titles at the market

Outside of the festival, Catalan Films & TV will be accommodating a delegation of over thirty* Catalan producers and hosting a specific schedule of market screenings. Thus, this year's Marché du Film (MIF) will be showing Patxi Amézcua's 25 kilates / 25 Carat (Ovideo TV and Icónica); 7 pasos y medio / 7.5 Steps by Lalo García (Iris Star); Ander by Roberto Castón (Ilusión Óptica and Euskal Irrati); Cenizas desde el cielo / Ashes from the Sky by José Antonio Quirós (Bausan Films and El Nacedón Films); Eloïse by Jesús Garay (Els Quatre Gats Audiovisuals and  Televisió de Catalunya); Andrea Martínez' Cosas Insignificantes / Insignificant Things (Manga Films, Media Films and Tequila Gang); Masons by Santiago Lapeira (Black Flag and Verne Films); Dieta Mediterránea / Mediterranean Food by Joaquín Oristrell (Messidor Films); Paintball by Daniel Benmayor (Filmax Entertainment); The Frost by Ferran Audí (Alta Realitat and Apuntolapospo, in association with Frost Media Film AS) and the teaser Magic Journey to Africa, by Jordi Llompart (Órbita Max).

SHORT-CAT at MIF

What's more, this year Catalan Films & TV has organized a special event for the Catalan short film, with a screening session on 16 May in the Short Film Corner. A committee appointed by the Consortium has selected nine productions for this short film showcase. Thus, the screening will include films such as actor Àlex Brendemühl's first project from behind the camera, Rumbo a peor / Worstward Ho (Voodoo Productions), a tribute to Samuel Beckett, and Joan C. Martorell's short film Microfísica (produced by Toni Verd), which was selected at the last Clermont-Ferrand Festival.
