El orfanato (The Orphanage), the Spanish candidate for the Oscars, will be kicking off the 40th celebration of the International Film Festival of Catalonia

The film by J. A. Bayona, produced by Rodar y Rodar Cine y Televisión, Telecinco Cinema and Guillermo del Toro, was chosen to open the upcoming Sitges Film Festival on 4 October. The rest of the Catalan representatives in the festival's official schedule will also form part of the newly expanded Catalan Focus section, which in the past was centred on retrospective films dedicated to classics and figures from the Catalan fantasy genre.
The presence of Catalan Films & TV at this fortieth celebration will revolve around three events: the annual Cine Regio gathering (on 3 October), the Co-production Meetings & Talent Campus (3 to 5 October) and the Catalan Film Festival (5 October).
